El sildenafil (compuesto UK-92,480) fue sintetizado por un grupo de químicos farmaceúticos de la Empresa Pfizer, en las instalaciones de investigación en Sandwich, Kent. Es más conocido por el nombre comercial Viagra©. Como el nombre de muchos otros fármacos, es una invención de mercadeo; pero posiblemente fue inspirado por la palabra «vyāghra» que en sánscrito significa «tigre».
Historia
Inicialmente fue estudiado para su uso en hipertensión (alta presión sanguínea), y angina de pecho (una forma de enfermedad cardiovascular isquémica).
